FREEDOM AND FIRE! A CIVIL WAR STORY

      by Amir Zaheri                    Chamber Orchestra conducted by Amir Zaheri

 

WORLD PREMIERE! This new chamber opera by Amir Zaheri on a libretto by Robin Behn tells the stories of women and men leading their lives in Tuscaloosa during the closing days of the Civil War, including the advancing of the Union troops across the Black Warrior River, the burning of the university campus, and the saving of the President's Mansion by a brave Mrs. Garland.

AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS

      by Gian Carlo Menotti                     Conducted by Laurie Rogers

 

NEW EVENT FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY! The UA Opera Theatre offers this holiday treat for audiences young and old. Inspired by Bosch's The Adoration of the Magi, Menotti's poignant drama tells the tale of three kings on a journey to bring gifts to the wondrous child, a loving Mother with a heart of gold, and the young boy Amahl who offers his crutch as a gift in the true spirit of Christmas. Bryant-Jordan Hall will be decorated for the holiday and the UA Opera Theatre hopes to make this an annual offering to the community.

THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR 

       by Otto Nicolai                               Conducted by Blake Richardson


This season's annual collaboration with the Huxford Symphony Orchestra and Maestro Blake Richardson is this comic masterpiece based on Shakespeare's play of the same name. One of the most popular operas in the first half of the 19th century, Merry Wives contains an enticing mix of comic flare, fantastic music, and the familiar foibles of the jolly Falstaff. Sung in German with projected English supertitles, and spoken dialogue in English.
